Intro to genres

Often when you book a musician, you will be asked what genre of music you would like for your event. This can become a stumbling block if you haven’t been introduced to them. I’m hoping this new series can help you with that.

Loosely put, genres refer to styles of music. The main styles you’ll come across are pop, jazz, classical and folk. However, these are still really broad terms which subgenres such as classic rock, metal, jazz standards, experimental jazz, baroque, romantic, English Morris, world music. Over the next few weeks I’m going to break all of these down and give a few examples for you to listen to so that the next time you’re asked “what genre?”, you can answer with confidence.
